By the end of this lesson, participants will be able to:
“You are only as sick as your secrets. Healing begins the moment you speak the truth.”
— Anonymous Recovery Saying
“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
— Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)
Lena would leave her job and park in the casino lot, justifying a “quick game” to clear her head. Her partner thought she was working late. Over time, she began lying more, covering her tracks, and secretly borrowing from family. Her shame grew with every deception—but she felt trapped. If she told the truth, she’d lose trust. If she didn’t, she’d lose herself.
Guilt leads to repentance.
Shame leads to hiding.
Gambling addiction thrives in secrecy. The more you hide, the more shame grows—and the harder it is to stop. The spiral deepens:
🧠 Confession breaks the loop. Grace rebuilds your story.
Write down three lies you’ve believed to justify gambling. (e.g., “It’s not hurting anyone,” “I can win it back,” “I’ll stop after next time.”)
Now write a truth statement to replace each one.
Lie | Truth |
---|---|
I’ll just do it one more time. | One more time keeps the spiral going. |
I can stop whenever I want. | If I could stop, I already would have. |
I deserve a break. | I deserve peace—not pain disguised as fun. |
“God, I’ve been hiding. I’ve lied. I’ve tried to fix it alone. But I can’t. I need Your truth to set me free. Replace my shame with Your mercy. Replace my secrecy with courage. Teach me how to walk in the light—one step at a time. Amen.”
Pick one person you trust—a mentor, friend, sponsor, or counselor—and tell one truth you’ve never shared before.
It doesn’t have to be your whole story—just one brave step into the light.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:5
