By the end of this lesson, participants will be able to:
“You are only as sick as your secrets. Healing begins the moment you speak the truth.”
โ Anonymous Recovery Saying
โWhoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.โ
โ Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)
Lena would leave her job and park in the casino lot, justifying a โquick gameโ to clear her head. Her partner thought she was working late. Over time, she began lying more, covering her tracks, and secretly borrowing from family. Her shame grew with every deceptionโbut she felt trapped. If she told the truth, sheโd lose trust. If she didnโt, sheโd lose herself.
Guilt leads to repentance.
Shame leads to hiding.
Gambling addiction thrives in secrecy. The more you hide, the more shame growsโand the harder it is to stop. The spiral deepens:
๐ง Confession breaks the loop. Grace rebuilds your story.
Write down three lies youโve believed to justify gambling. (e.g., โItโs not hurting anyone,โ โI can win it back,โ โIโll stop after next time.โ)
Now write a truth statement to replace each one.
| Lie | Truth |
|---|---|
| Iโll just do it one more time. | One more time keeps the spiral going. |
| I can stop whenever I want. | If I could stop, I already would have. |
| I deserve a break. | I deserve peaceโnot pain disguised as fun. |
โGod, Iโve been hiding. Iโve lied. Iโve tried to fix it alone. But I canโt. I need Your truth to set me free. Replace my shame with Your mercy. Replace my secrecy with courage. Teach me how to walk in the lightโone step at a time. Amen.โ
Pick one person you trustโa mentor, friend, sponsor, or counselorโand tell one truth you’ve never shared before.
It doesnโt have to be your whole storyโjust one brave step into the light.
โThe light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.โ โ John 1:5
