By the end of this lesson, participants will be able to:
“You are not your wins or losses. You are not your past. You are who you choose to become.”
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
— Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
Jamal loved the feeling of winning—it made him feel important, innovative, in control. But after losing thousands, he felt like a failure. His identity was attached to outcomes: win = worthy, lose = worthless. In recovery, he struggled with who he was without the game. But slowly, through journaling, volunteering, and counseling, he discovered something he hadn’t felt in years: peace without performance.
Over time, compulsive gambling tells us:
These are identity lies—and they feed shame.
But your worth is not transactional.
It’s not earned by luck, money, or performance.
You are valuable because you exist. You are worthy of love and healing—even when you fail.
Create two lists:
Place this list somewhere you can see it—repeat it until your mind begins to agree with what your spirit already knows.
“God, I’ve believed lies about who I am—some I heard, some I made up, some I’ve replayed for years. But I want to see myself the way You see me. Not through the lens of my worst moments, but through Your love. Help me rebuild my identity on truth, not outcomes. Remind me I’m not the sum of my wins or losses—I’m Your masterpiece in progress. Amen.”
This week, take one intentional action that affirms your identity apart from gambling.
Ideas:
You’re becoming someone who doesn’t need to gamble to feel alive.
You’re already alive—and healing.
